Peacock Bass Fishing is a Popular Sport

Peacock Bass Fishing is a Popular Sport.

Peacock bass are native to the Amazon River of South America. They also inhabit the waters of Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Panama, Singapore, Venezuela, Guam, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands.

There are quite a few travel agencies that provide fishing trips on the Amazon and other Peacock bass fishing hot spots. These companies provide airline bookings, visa and document services, tackle recommendations and specialized tackle sales, travel insurance, and more.

Imagine casting your line into the mysterious and beautiful black wild jungle framed waters of the Amazon in Brazil. Then imagine the thrill of the explosive strike of one of the biggest Peacock Bass you’ve ever seen. Hang on while your peacock bass delivers a bone-jarring strike, aerial acrobatics and a line-stripping run.  These freshwater bullies are so ferocious when hunting that they sometimes destroy fishing gear when striking.

The speckled peacock bass can grow up to three feet, four inches in length. Their eating quality is very good with white and sweet flesh when cooked. It is not bony or oily and is similar in taste to snapper or grouper.

Twenty thousand Peacock Bass were introduced into the lakes and canals of Miami-Dade County, Florida in 1984 where they quickly multiplied and are now plentiful in places such as the Everglades, Lake Okeechobee, and Kissimmee. Peacock bass are sensitive to cold and the only place where they have been successfully stocked is in Southern florida no further north than Broward County.

They are voracious feeders and often grow more than a pound in their first year. This growth rate requires a lot of food and makes them ready and willing to viciously attack just about any type bait or lure, when retreived in a lively manner. These fighting qualities have made them prized game fish. The  explosiveness of their ferocious strike is unmatched by any fresh water fish in the world.

The most common techniques for catching largemouth bass will work for catching Peacock bass except that  peacock bass will not usually strike artificial worms.
Large surface baits have been the most commonly used lure for Peacock bass. Fly fishing with lures such as poppers and large streamers, are also becoming popular for catching Peacock bass.

It is not recommended to keep these fish in private aquarims. Fish over 12″ in length should be kept in a  tank with a preferred capacity of 220 gallons with large rocks and large, robust plants in the background to serve as hiding places. Have a good fitting cover as this fish may take to the air if frightened. It will require a filter that will be able to handle the large amounts of waste produced by messy eaters.

These Peacock Bass are best left in the natural environment where they provide unexcelled angling pleasure.
